This course is an introduction into the basics of geology through a combination of lectures, quizzes and assignments. We will address topics ranging from understanding Earth's place in the Universe to exploring the interior of our planet, from mineral and rock identification to plate tectonics, from Earth history to traces of past life, and from deep time to today's global environmental changes from a geological perspective.

The course is an introduction to geochemistry, where chemistry is used to understand and explain geological processes.
The course covers chemical fundamentals, basic concepts of thermodynamics, acid-base equilibrium, redox processes, and introduction to isotopic geochemistry. These themes will be studied in the context of ‘System Earth’ at the interface between the biosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere. Therefore, the focus will be placed on low-temperature processes.

This course is part of the first year of the distance learning program in Geoscience offered by Stockholm University. It follows on from Tellus I - Geology.
Tellus II Geology is a distance course about:
• fundamental principles of geochemistry, mineralogy, and petrology
• description, identification, and classification of commonly occurring rock-forming minerals
• description, identification, and classification of commonly occurring igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks
• Sweden's bedrock geology
