This course is an introduction into the basics of geology through a combination of lectures, quizzes and assignments. We will address topics ranging from understanding Earth's place in the Universe to exploring the interior of our planet, from mineral and rock identification to plate tectonics, from Earth history to traces of past life, and from deep time to today's global environmental changes from a geological perspective.
This course is part of the first year of the distance learning program in Geoscience offered by Stockholm University. It follows on from Tellus I - Geology.
Tellus II Geology is a distance course about:
• fundamental principles of geochemistry, mineralogy, and petrology
• description, identification, and classification of commonly occurring rock-forming minerals
• description, identification, and classification of commonly occurring igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks
• Sweden's bedrock geology
